If you shopped for beauty products recently, you have probably seen CBD on the shelves. This is the newest trend coming out of beauty companies and the ingredient is getting a lot of attention.
CBD is considered helpful in treating acne and making your skin naturally soft. While much research still needs to be done, many companies are already rolling out products that leverage CBD for consumer benefit.
What is CBD?
CBD (or cannabidiol) is a substance found in cannabis plants, such as hemp and marijuana. CBD, like THC, is a cannabinoid and has recently been identified for a variety of medical use cases. However, unlike THC, CBD does not get you high or have any psychoactive effects. It merely works with your body’s endocannabinoid system to optimize a variety of bodily systems.
THC is typically found in high quantities in marijuana, while CBD is mostly found in industrial hemp. After the Farm Bill of 2018 was passed in the United States, CBD from industrial hemp was legalized and placed under the regulation of the FDA. This has opened up a wide range of industries, including the beauty-product industry, to the possibility of using CBD.
How does CBD help your skin?
As CBD works with your endocannabinoid system, it is believed to function as an anti-inflammatory agent and antioxidant. For this reason, many use CBD to treat pain, spasms, anxiety and more. Specifically relating to skin care, CBD is supposed to decrease inflammation, minimize moisture loss and normalize overactive sebaceous gland cells, which is one of the main causes of acne.
While early studies support these findings, CBD is still in the early days as a product so it is hard to know for sure whether the results are solidly supported.
People are using CBD for a range of issues, including muscles spasms or pains after working out, moisturizing skin and reducing acne. Actress Kristen Bell, from Frozen and The Good Place, is famous for using CBD lotion after going to the gym to speed up muscle recovery. Additionally, a number of writers have noted that CBD products help their skin feel softer.
Industry expert opinions
Research is still ongoing, but some studies are starting to prove CBD’s powers for skin care. Industry professionals are seeing positive results with their patients and are testifying to its abilities.
As New York City–based aesthetician Jeannel Astarita told Allure Magazine, “With an impressive and ever-growing number of studies finding CBD to be a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory among many other properties, it is now being used to treat pain, anxiety, spasms, and much more.”
Additionally, cosmetic dermatologist Shereene Idriss spoke with Glamour Magazine and said, “There’s a 2014 study in the Journal of Clinical Investigation that showed promising results for using CBD to treat acne.” So, while it is still a little too early to say that CBD is a better beauty-care substance than retinol or vitamin C, there are definitely reasons to try it out.

How to find the right product for you
As you explore beauty products, make sure to find the right product for you and your needs. Whether you have dry skin, oily skin, acne or any other condition, first find a product that works well at treating your situation, then look for something with CBD. Just because a product has CBD does not mean it will work well for you. Also, make sure to look into the manufacturer’s description to find a high-quality product.
With more and more research coming out in support of CBD’s medical benefits, consumer products that contain CBD will continue to emerge. Consider adding a CBD product to your regimen as you look for new ways to keep your skin, hair and body in peak condition.
